As a result, Robertson and Lubic reflected, “Learning, then, occurs by way of success and failure, but most importantly, it is negotiated through experience” (p. 97).

A dilemma that poses a problem for some groups is a regularly revolving membership. This can occur in voluntary organizations and community associations and poses a challenge for keeping the vision and common purpose alive and meaningful as old members leave and new members join. This dilemma is likely prevalent among college student organizations. Given that college students usually leave their institutions after some amount of time, many groups and organizations on campus exist well before and after any one group of students is a part of them. It is likely that these groups have preexisting purposes and at some point underwent the process of developing a common purpose. Student leaders should ask themselves how the purpose of each group they belong to applies to them and how they, as group members, can influence and maintain a group's vision. Intentional activities that ask new members why they want to join this group, acquaint new members with the current vision, and create time to discuss any discrepancies will let new members know their views matter to the future of the group and keep the group renewed and vibrant with these new ideas (Komives et al., 2013).
